Position Scope
Reporting to the Director of QHSE and External Compliance, the Commercial Driver Instructor is a leveled role with three positions: Level 1: Junior Instructor, Level 2: Senior Instructor, and Level 3: Train the Trainer. The ideal candidate will provide high-quality instruction to aspiring commercial drivers. This position involves delivering both in-classroom theory and behind-the-wheel training, ensuring trainees develop the skills and knowledge necessary to safely operate commercial vehicles in compliance with provincial and federal regulations. This is a combined field and office role, depending on business needs. This position is considered to be a safety-sensitive position.
Job Responsibilities
Instructing
- Deliver high-quality instruction in both classroom-based theory and practical in-vehicle training.
- Conduct on-road training, demonstrating and supervising safe driving techniques, vehicle handling, and maneuvering in various traffic conditions.
- Guide students through the theoretical and practical components, covering topics such as pre-trip inspections, vehicle control, defensive driving, hours of service and cargo securement.
- Instruct students on safety protocols and best practices in alignment with federal and provincial transportation laws and regulations.
- Ensure students understand and apply safety requirements, including defensive driving techniques, hours of service rules, and load management.
- Assess student performance, provide constructive feedback, and tailor instruction to meet individual learning needs.
- Offer guidance and mentorship to students throughout their training, fostering confidence and competency in their driving abilities.
- Prepare students for their road tests and ensure they are well-equipped to pass required exams.
Vehicle and Equipment Maintenance
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of training vehicles to ensure they meet safety standards.
- Report and log any vehicle maintenance needs or concerns promptly.
Continuous Improvement
- Stay current with industry trends, changes in transportation regulations, and updates to the Learning Pathway program
- Collaborate with the training team to improve the curriculum and enhance training effectiveness.
Driver/Field support
- When not in training, assisting with deliveries of vehicles, equipment, parts, chemicals and/or personnel to various locations.
- When in the field, Bulk Driver, Operator and performing Class 1,3 and 5 Driver Evaluations.
- Secure, inspect, and record approved loads prior to moving loads from their origin.
- Understand and assist with rigging in and rigging down units on location.
- Knowledge of bulk handling components and pneumatic vessels.
- Regular inspection of equipment and maintenance.
- Always maintain appropriate documentation in the vehicle. (i.e. emergency contact list, registration & pink card, CVIP, safety fitness certification, TAC permit, weight scale phone numbers, and service requirements.)
- Communicate effectively with clients and internally with other departments, including dispatch and bulk plant.
- Establish and maintain procedures to ensure high level of service.
Level 1: Junior Instructor
- Primarily responsible for delivering one-on-one, in-vehicle instruction under the supervision of a Senior Instructor or the Director of Quality Assurance.
- Assists Senior Instructors with classroom instruction and administrative tasks.
- Focuses on developing their teaching skills, deepening their knowledge of the Learning Pathway curriculum, and understanding assessment criteria.
Level 2: Senior Instructor
- Can deliver both in-vehicle and classroom instruction independently, without direct supervision.
- Mentors Junior Instructors, providing guidance and support.
- Updating and maintaining curriculum development and training materials.
- Creating solutions to complex student challenges and advance instruction.
Level 3: Train the Trainer
- Develop and deliver training programs for new and existing instructors.
- Certifies instructors in the learning pathway curriculum and instructional methods.
- Subject matter expert and leader for the training team.
- Collaborates with management to align training programs with company goals and industry standards.
General
- Participate in training and development activities.
- Other related duties as required .
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Required:
- Valid Class 1 Alberta driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
- Minimum of 5 years experience as a commercial truck driver with a valid Class 1 (or equivalent) driver’s license.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively instruct and engage students.
- Excellent knowledge of provincial and federal commercial driving regulations.
- Ability to identify student learning needs and tailor instruction accordingly.
- Proficient in vehicle operation, including air brake systems, manual and automatic transmissions.
- Legally eligible to work in the country the role is based out of.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings or weekends, depending on class schedules and driving needs.
- Occasional travel may be required for off-site training or road tests.
- Ability to provide instruction in both classroom and on-road settings.
- Looking For:
- Valid Alberta Driver Instructor certification for Class 1 & 3 operations.
- Previous experience as a Senior Level driver instructor or trainer preferred. However, Junior Level instructors will be considered.
- Good computer skills, proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel) and other software as required.
- Experience in the completion of reports.
- Demonstrated ability to ensure compliance with company policies, procedures and safety.
