POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs daily work assignments for the Senior Center Division of the Community Services Department in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.
RECRUITMENT QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- High School Diploma or GED;
- Valid New Mexico Driver's License with a driving record acceptable to the City of Alamogordo;
- Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Desired:
- Valid New Mexico Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B with a Passenger (P) endorsement with a driving record acceptable to the City of Alamogordo.
- Experience working with senior citizens.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential Duties
- Safely transports senior citizens by bus or van to and from the Senior Center, residence, and other locations to assist them in completing various errands, including but not limited to, shopping, doctor, beauty, and barber shop appointments, and bill paying;
- Safely transports senior citizens by bus or van on day trips sponsored by the Senior Center; may assist with the advertising and planning of such events;
- Provides proper, respectful, physical support to assist senior citizens into and out of the bus or van; secures mobility devices;
- Operates the vehicle lift for wheelchair users; secures the device and passenger;
- Uses radios in vehicles to stay in contact with the Senior Center and other drivers;
- Maintains required logs and documents associated with driving duties;
- Ensures vehicles and associated equipment are in good running condition and arranges for preventive and corrective maintenance;
- Ensures work areas and assigned vehicles are organized and clean;
- Reports any unsafe working conditions or faulty equipment to the supervisor immediately;
- Greets senior citizens and the public on the telephone and in person, answers questions regarding Senior Center services and directs individuals to appropriate party;
- May train new drivers as assigned;
- May assist with maintaining and cleaning the Senior Center facility by taking out the trash, cleaning out coffee pots and popcorn machines, arranging tables and chairs, and mopping floors, as assigned;
- Maintains safety equipment such as first aid kits and fire extinguishers;
- Helps sort items donated to the thrift store or library;
- May perform light office work;
- Contributes to a high-quality work culture through participation in training and mentoring to develop skills, including safety-related training and skills;
- Interacts professionally and provides excellent customer service to all levels of City staff and citizens to ensure high operational and service standards; and
- Performs duties in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.
OTHER IMPORTANT DUTIES
- Must obtain and maintain required license(s) and/or certification(s);
- The Alamo Senior Center is a backup emergency shelter for the community, and this position may provide assistance in the event of an emergency, if necessary;
- Must maintain required license(s);
- Maintains the confidentiality of information obtained during the performance of duties; and
- Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
