General Description:The of Jacksonville is seeking caring individuals interested in working with our Youth Summer Programs within the Recreation Department as a Temporary Bus Driver. They will perform intermediate semiskilled work in transporting passengers and the regular operation of passenger buses; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

This position assist with the departments summer program. The projected end date will be approximately August 31.

Essential Functions/Typical Tasks

Operating city passenger busses in the performance of transporting recreation participants. (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.   • Operate City busses to transport passengers for special events.
  • Drive and maintain a schedule; transport passengers to scheduled events; assist passengers in loading and unloading as needed; operate specialized loading and unloading equipment to assist wheelchair passengers in a safe and timely manner.
  • Tactfully greet passengers; answer questions and provide information to the general public regarding rules, regulations and other information; refer sensitive inquiries and complaints to appropriate staff.
  • Operate a two-way radio; report accidents; provide staff support in accident investigations.
  • Prepare and inspect assigned vehicle for daily operations; check and maintain fluid levels; perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs as necessary; maintain and submit vehicle mileage records as requested.
  • Ensure safety regulations, rules and codes are enforced and obeyed by passengers in assigned vehicle; report persistent violators.
  • Maintain contact with supervisor and report on current position and conditions affecting the operation of the scheduled events as required.
  • Performs related tasks as required.

Required Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

A current DOT Medical Card; North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License with an endorsement for air brakes at the time of employment and a passenger endorsement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations. Thorough knowledge of City and state driving rules and regulations. Thorough knowledge of practices and procedures of mass transit equipment operation. Thorough knowledge of city streets and geographical locations and layout. Thorough knowledge of safe work practices. Ability to operate mass transit vehicles and equipment; perform preventative maintenance on assigned vehicle; tactfully respond to requests and inquiries from the general public. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including the citizens and the general public. Ability to operate a two-way radio; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and inwriting.
